The color cover illustration on the Winter 2003 issue of Skyline Magazine ($5; Victoria Valentine; Box 295, Stormville NY 12582;
www.skylinepublcations.com; SkylineEditor@aol.com; 8 1/2 by 11 inches; coated stock, saddle-stitched cover in full-color; 64 coated-stock pages) has a fantasy sex component, as do a couple of the issue's many other illustrations and photos. And, then, there is that section called "Enter At Your Own Risk," although the four shortish stories appearing there are horror stories rather than anything soft blue. SM contains all sorts of thingsthe winners of awards in a short story contest. Interviews with Sandra Hale Schulman and D'Iberville Mississippi Mayor Randy Quave and radio personality Margaret Cooper, poems homely ("Mothers with tanned bodies and perfect nails / Think parenting means fresh cookies each day / No spare moment, they list off the best sales / You found time to hear what I had to say" begins Faith Selby's "To My Mother") and conventional strength ("& I fell over Jennifer / & we were tangled up / as we danced beneath 'California Stars'" begins Douglas Bales's "Jennifer By Starlight"). There are ads (including one for "Glamour Portraits by
GinElf") and contributors notes with accompanying black and white photos, stories and sections called "Inspirational" and "Additional Features and Articles" and "Student Authors," color photos from New Zealand and color artwork from Sweden, and some brief reviews. Some of the issue's two-column pages are just packed with writing. But we kept turning back to the graphics, Nathan Combs's photos of women and Carrie Hall's vaguely racy paintings of elves, including that cover picture. The magazine is lucky to have them, and lucky to be edited by Ms. Valentine, who must be one of those indy editing dynamos, capable of running several feature promotions and of processing this issue's bulk of writing and illustrations.
